Solarizing Your Community

Solarize Westchester is a public-private partnership designed to make residential and small commercial solar energy systems more accessible and affordable for homeowners and commercial property owners in Westchester County. Through the Solarize Campaigns, the Solarize Westchester Team will assist local communities in selecting solar photovoltaic (“PV”) installers through a vetted and competitive process.

The following organizations, comprising the current Solarize Westchester Team, are offering the Solarize Westchester campaigns:

Sustainable Westchester – Sponsor
Mount Kisco, NY 10549

Abundant Efficiency – Program Manager
Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522

Prior Solarize Westchester campaigns were funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) through NY-Sun. Current campaigns will continue to benefit from technical support from NYSERDA but will be funded through payment by Installers to the Solarize Westchester Team for installations completed through Solarize. This creates a sustainable model for Solarize campaigns and allows them to be offered to communities at no cost to the community.

The Solarize Westchester Team requests submissions from Westchester County communities including cities, towns, villages or coalitions of towns and/or villages to participate in Solarize Westchester 2.0 Campaigns launching in March of 2017. The Solarize Westchester Team will select up to four (4) communities (or coalitions of communities) to participate in this round of campaigns. Coalitions of two to three towns and/or villages may jointly submit one application. Applications will be evaluated competitively.

Once selected, communities will work with the Program Manager to choose a PV installer through a separate Request for Proposal (“RFP”) process issued by Sustainable Westchester. The selected PV installer(s) will provide, at a minimum, competitive pricing, free site visits, collaboration in community outreach, and installation services. Each community and selected installer, with support from the Solarize Westchester Campaign Team, will develop and implement a 12-week community outreach campaign between approximately March 2017 and June 2017 with the goal of dramatically increasing the number of existing solar PV installations in each community.

A successful Solarize campaign is dependent on committed and well-connected volunteers and community leaders, particularly in identifying creative ways to get the word out to their community about Solarize. Effective teams will work collaboratively on a variety of outreach approaches tailored to each community. Their objective is to encourage as many homeowners and commercial property owners as possible to consider going solar, especially those who may never have considered solar until now.

The objective of the Solarize Westchester Campaign is to significantly ramp up the rate of solar adoption in the County. Solarize accomplishes this by encouraging very public and very positive conversations about solar energy throughout our region, and by demonstrating numerous solar success stories. Communities interested in Solarize Westchester should also consider how they might leverage the “Solarize Buzz” to further other local energy efforts (e.g., municipal or school solar projects, and outreach relating to energy efficiency, including any Energize campaigns underway).

Similar programs around the country inspired the Solarize Westchester program.  Success of the Solarize Westchester campaigns already completed – resulting in over 400 solar installations – shows how well the model works. More information is available at www.SolarizeWestchester.com.
